Keep Leaky Faucets at Bay

According to the EPA, the amount of water leaked from U.S. homes could exceed more than 1 trillion gallons per year. That's equivalent to the annual water use of Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami combined.

For quick and simple ways to keep your home plumbing system in optimal shape, Cifial USA's plumbing expert, Art Gambill, offers these tips:

1. Remove debris from faucet cartridges - In cartridge faucets, debris collects in the cartridge over time that prevents the lever from stopping the water supply completely, allowing water to continue dripping through the faucet. You can prevent this from occurring by removing the cartridge from the faucet and cleaning any debris found inside.

2. Rid shower-heads of calcium - Shower environments are prone to calcium deposits - especially shower heads. Buildup on shower head flow restrictors create a trap for water that continue to leak after water flow is turned off. You can break down buildup with a home solution of 2 parts water and 1 part vinegar. This solution works by creating just enough acidity to dissolve the calcium and allow water to flow unobstructed.

3. Keep aerators free of buildup - Aerators, which filter water streams as they flow from faucets, can also become clogged with mineral deposits. Unscrew the aerator and clean any buildup to keep water from storing in the deposits and dripping through the faucet.

Step 1 - Prepare Surfaces

Step 2 - Tape Off Your Chalkboard
Use masking tape to mark off a rectangular space for your chalkboard, and apply Studio Finishes Chalkboard (307) paint within the taped-off area.

Step 3 - Framing
Use decorative molding or a colorful painted border to give your chalkboard space an extra personal touch. Remember to include a ledge for chalk and erasers.

Helpful Hints

- In children's rooms, be sure to make your chalkboard low and large enough so that younger children can reach and have ample space.
- In your office or study, paint a chalkboard calendar with squares for dates. Then update your schedule with a swipe of the eraser.

Tips on Bathroom Lighting

When lighting a bathroom the first and most important focus should be on the vanity lighting. Ideally a vertical fixture should be hung on either side of the mirror. This allows for light to be evenly distributed across ones face. The fixtures should be mounted approximately 5.5’ above the floor (eye level), and 36-40” apart. This helps to eliminate shadows under the eyes and chin.
In situations where installing fixtures on either side of the mirror is not possible due to size and installation constraints the next best option is a light hung directly over the vanity. It should be hung 75-80” above the floor. In larger bathrooms the horizontal fixtures can be used in conjuncture with the vertical lights to give additional overall illumination to the space. A bare minimum of 150 watts of light should be used in lighting the vanity it is always safer to error on the side of too much wattage. In cases where the home owner finds that there is too much light either lower wattage bulbs can be used or a dimmer installed. It is always easier to reduce the wattage of a fixture once it’s installed that to figure out how to increase the amount of light if the fixture installed is inadequate.
For additional overall lighting and lighting in the shower and over the bath tub recessed is the ideal option. For the shower and tub make sure a wet rated model is selected. The only place recessed is not ideal is over the vanity, It has a tendency to cast shadows onto the face making personal grooming tasks such as shaving an make up application to be more difficult.
Some clients prefer a little more glamour over the tub and may request a hanging fixture such as a crystal chandelier, or pendant light. Make sure any hanging fixture you choose is UL approved for a wet rating otherwise for safety and code reasons should not be used in that application.

Laminate flooring seems to be popular among home owners who are looking for a beautiful, durable, yet cost-effective flooring solution for their home. As matter of fact, I am recommending it for my client who is looking to replace her old carpet.
Many of today’s laminate styles consist of extremely authentic wood or natural stone visuals to accommodate any room. I am recommending the “plank” look, which resembles real cherry wood.

Laminate floors are relatively new to this country, but have been used in Europe for more than 25 years because laminate flooring can be installed over many types of existing floors it has made it a natural for old European buildings since it is installed floated over the subfloor.

By using the countertop technology and adding considerably more resin to the wear layer, some laminate floor manufacturers boast that their laminate floors are now 10 to 20 times harder than laminate countertops.
Since this resin-filled wear layer is so dense, it becomes extremely difficult to stain or scratch.
So, if you are thinking of replacing your old carpet with hard-surface flooring, sure to check out laminate options.

Every year, Friday after Thanksgiving, we put up Christmas decorations. Everyone in the family including visiting relatives (grandparents, aunt & uncle) lend a hand to put up the tree, tie garlands in the staircase, hang stockings on the mantel, and display Christmas decorations all throughout the house. Color Solutions for Master bed and bath

Paint is a great way to turn a master bedroom and bath into a master suite. Coordinating the color palettes between the two rooms adds a sense of flow and continuity. This is especially important if your master bathroom is visible from the bedroom.

Select a color scheme: When choosing paint colors, you need to pick a inspiration piece that you like. This might be bedding or shower tile that you like. Take your color cues from the existing features in the room. If you have slate or stone in the bathroom, pull paint colors from the natural elements. You may find blue, gray, green or orange in your stone if you look closely enough.
Neutral colors: Using neutral paint allows you to change the style of your room through accessories without having to repaint. Taupe, white and cream also work well with bathroom fixtures like sinks and tubs. Paint the trim a lighter color for added depth. Painting the ceiling a slighter darker color than the walls adds interest to a neutral room.
Soothing colors: Cool colors can be soothing and relaxing. Try a monochromatic room by painting the walls, trim, ceiling in the same hues. Use different paint finishes to delineate the spaces. Deep blue, pale blue or gray create a peaceful color palette. The same colors used in the master bathroom will create a clean, spa like feeling.
Theme colors: Choose paint colors based on an overall theme for your master suite. If your bedroom furniture features dark wood or iron scrollwork, consider a Spanish theme. Use shades of gold, amber and burgundy for a dramatic master suite. Red walls might be too lively for a bedroom, so try a focal wall so the color doesn't overwhelm the space.
Continuity: The master bedroom and bathroom should flow together to make the spaces seem connected and bigger. Try using the same paint chip in both rooms, but choose a light shade for one room and a darker tone for the other. You can also coordinate a master bathroom by reversing your color palette. If you have green walls and taupe accents in the bedroom try taupe walls and green accents in the bathroom. This gives each room a different look while coordinating the spaces. If you want completely different colors, carry at least one paint color throughout the room, such as dark chocolate brown on the bedroom furniture and the bathroom vanity and mirror frame.

I watched the final 3 design star episode on HGTV. The challenge was to create a space for 3 celebrities. My favorite design was the one done by Lonni. She got eliminated due to her lack of time management, which I felt it was unfair. I love the organic materials used in the guest room of Tiffani Thiessen. I thought the focal wall was fantastic. Shed used the grass cloth wallpaper with a traditional navy blue pattern in a bold scale. I liked the color and mix of different style was a great idea.

I had an area rug that is mostly in orange, so I wanted to carry that orange theme through out the family room.
My couch is green which is a nice background color to pop orange pillows. Brown in curtains and mirror frame also serves as a nice grounding color. I also added an orange lamp and a vase to repeat the same color. Repeating the same color provide cohesive look to the room.

Longing for a tidy, organized kitchen where everything is right where you need it? Read on for eight great kitchen organizing tips.

Sort and toss - Chances are much of your clutter is composed of stuff that isn't really essential to the day-to-day functioning of your kitchen. Start the cleaning process by purging your cabinets and drawers of gadgets you hardly ever use. Donate the things you don't need, and place rarely-used items in storage.

Get closer - Once you've pared your inventory down to essentials, put them in places that make the most sense. Keep glassware and cups near the refrigerator or sink; utensils, spices and plates near the cooking area; mugs near the coffeemaker.

Divide and conquer. - Adding vertical dividers in cabinetry makes it easy to stack cookie sheets and cake pans. For lower cabinets, a simple spin of a lazy susan puts everything within reach so you'll never have to empty them to see what's on hand. Small, inexpensive shelves can double your storage, allowing you to neatly organize the pantry. An under-the-sink caddy stores all your cleaning sprays and wipes.

Use "hidden" space. - Free up valuable cabinet and drawer space by installing hooks for coffee mugs and utensils under cabinets. Hang pots from an attractive rack on the ceiling. Make use of blank wall space or a backsplash by adding a utensil rack. Nest and stack pots, bowls and pans to maximize your storage space.

Abolish the junk drawer. - There's no need for a "junk drawer" if every item has a designated place. Use small dividers to stop pencils, coupons and gadgets from jumbling together. Keep plastic grocery bags tidy by stuffing them into a dispenser.

Paper trail. - If you can't seem to eliminate the piles of takeout menus, recipes torn out of magazines and other such paper clutter from your kitchen, at least contain them. Sort them into categories, put them into colorful file folders and stow them in magazine binders near your cookbooks.

Play favorites. - Group items by how frequently you use them. Put your favorite cookware, dishes and glassware in the front of cabinets for easy access. Store specialty cookware and less-frequently used appliances and utensils like blenders, quesadilla makers, and food processors tucked away but easy to find when you need them.

Smart appliances. - If you're considering larger changes to your kitchen, such as buying new appliances or remodeling, a little foresight could save countless hours of clutter-busting down the line. Look for refrigerators that maximize interior space through strategically placed compartments; they'll make it easy to organize leftovers, large soda bottles and produce.

I always enjoy looking at modern art because I like abstract images and unusual shapes and materials used in the art. I am often amazed by creative minds of artist. When I visited the De Young Museum, I saw an art made with charcoal and wire by Cornelia Parker. I was so impressed with the scale and unique materials used in the art, so I looked up the artist when I came home. She is an English sculptor and installation artist. She engages in intervention with site-specific work, and is best known for large-scale installations such as Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View (1991), where she had a garden shed blown up by the British Army and suspended the fragments as if suspending the explosion process in time. In the centre was a light which cast the shadows of the wood dramatically on the walls of the room. Here are few images of her work.

Having lunch at the café in De Young Museum was fun. The food was delicious, but I thought interior design of the café was beautiful. I love the lightings used in the ceiling and the industrial look of dining chairs in the dining room. Statues in the lawn area outside of the cafe were very creative and unique. My favorite was the cloth pin.

De Young Museum

De Young Museum in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park was founded in 1895 and re- opened in Oct. 2005. Since it’s re-opening, I’ve been wanting to visit and finally I went last week. King Tut exhibit was very interesting and educational, but most of all, I love the architecture of the building. I like the modern design and the shape of the building reminded me of Aztec pyramid of Mexico. Modern meets the ancient structures? I thought it was pretty cool. I found some images of the museum on internet and these are some of my favorites.

Fleur De Lis Design

I was browsing Ballard Designs online catalog and I saw several products that had Fleur De Lis design on it. Fleur means flower, and Lis means lily. Fleur De Lis is used as a decorative design or symbol associated with the French monarchy in a historical context. It is my favorite symbol and I even used in my company logo. 1. The little things start to go wrong

All bathrooms are prone to everyday wear and tear, but some problems require more than a simple repair job. "When the tile grout begins to flake out of its joints, the whites in the bathroom turn yellow, or the ceiling is crumbling from moisture, it's time," says Toronto-based interior designer Tania Bortolotto. Depending on the cost of serious repairs, it may make sense to spend a little more and create a brand new bathroom.

2. You're stuck in a retro rut

While it's true that yesterday's trends often resurface, some are best left in the past. "Some people still have the avocado-and-gold color palette from the '70s," says Carol McCurdy of Galleria Bath and Kitchen Showplace in Pinellas Park, FL. "Creating a fresh look can be as simple as using a neutral color in your tub and lavatory, and accenting it with color on the wall and window treatments." The current trend in bathroom lighting is toward larger, sunnier baths, and today's top bathroom designers are placing more emphasis on artificial lighting as well. A single, small lighting fixture protruding from the middle of the ceiling doesn’t suffice by today’s standards. Alternative sources of general lighting include recessed ceiling fixtures or indirect lighting that bounces off the ceiling or walls. In addition to good general lighting, adequate task lights are a must.

How the bathroom lighting is selected and placed depends on the size and layout of your bathroom. It also depends on the color scheme—bright colors reflect and enhance lighting effects; dark hues absorb and subdue them.

Lighting a Mirror

Small or large, a bathroom typically functions as a grooming center. For this reason, the area in front of the mirror should be evenly illuminated and free of shadows.

Experts' Insight for Bathroom Lighting

When planning a lighting design for your bathroom, follow these guidelines to ensure adequate general lighting.

Light sources should be placed so that light emanates from above, below, and both sides of the mirror. This technique, called cross-lighting, effectively eliminates shadows. If you have light coming only from above, it hits your eyebrows, causing shadows beneath your eyes—not an encouraging sight first thing every morning.

The first consideration should be a fixture that casts light just over the front edge of the sink and countertop. If you choose a light-colored countertop, more light will reflect up onto your face. Then add more lights centered on each side of the mirror.

If fluorescent fixtures are selected to illuminate a mirror, tubes designed for vanity illumination or tubes that produce daylight-spectrum light is ideal. The light from standard fluorescent tubes can be cold and harsh—acceptable for office or shop lighting but not for makeup application. Use one 24-inch, 20-watt tube on each side of the mirror. Two 24-inch, 20-watt tubes mounted above the mirror or a 32-watt circle light on the ceiling will offer adequate lighting to this space.

If fixtures are selected that require incandescent light bulbs, one option is to mount one wall fixture or pendant lamp on each side of the mirror. These side lights each should contain two 60-watt or 75-watt bulbs. If the ceiling fixture is round, it should be at least 12 inches in diameter and contain a bulb or bulbs rated at a total of 100 to 120 watts.

Larger mirrors that are 36 inches or more in width may require a different approach. If standard guidelines are followed, the center of the mirror may appear a bit dark. To avoid this, more powerful overhead light fixtures should be selected, and full coverage over the width of the mirror should be ensured. One effective option is a double row of recessed ceiling fixtures over the vanity.

Small powder rooms typically require one light above the mirror, a fixture on each side of the mirror, and one ceiling light directed toward the front edge of the vanity countertop.

Bath and Shower Lights

In an enclosed shower or tub area, most codes call for enclosed, vapor-proof lights. Use caution when positioning them, however; you don't want to look right into the light when you're lying in the tub. An infrared heat lamp mounted just outside the tub or shower will help avoid chilly exits. All switches should be located at least 6 feet from the tub and shower.

Stall Lights

In toilet compartments, a centered ceiling fixture using a 60 to 75 watt incandescent bulb or a 30 to 40 watt fluorescent tube should be installed.

The Right Light

Most experts recommend using incandescent bulbs in the bathroom, because the light that’s produced has natural, complexion-flattering properties. But incandescent bulbs also produce a good deal of heat that's often unwanted. Compact fluorescent fixtures are a good alternative. They demand far less electricity per lumen (a measurement of light intensity), and the tubes render a warm, pleasing spectrum of colors.

Consider having a dimmer switch installed for your bathroom's overall lighting. Fluorescent lighting doesn’t typically function on a dimmer switch. This will allow you to adjust the light to suit your needs and moods. Dimmers also make night-time visits to the bathroom more bearable, since the light can be turned down below the blinding level. Be sure to install a switch by each doorway so no one will have to cross the bathroom in the dark.

Victorian – Characterized by steeply pitched roofs, pointed arch windows, elaborate trim along roof edges, high dormers, lancet windows, and other Gothic details. Light fixtures range from chandeliers and kerosene and electric lamps to astrals and sconces. Cabinets are usually weathered looking and made of heavy, real wood with chrome pulls and knobs.

Modern – Moderns styles change from year to year. Most recent designs include sleek, straight and clean lines. Less is more, such as less accessories, hidden appliances, and minimal details. Common materials include stainless steel, marble, granite, and frosted glass. Basic geometric shapes and bold, bright colors such as reds, blues, and yellow or black and white are prevalent.

Southwestern – This style features a lot of detail and craftsmanship. Natural materials such as stucco and hand-painted fabrics are very common, as are wood, quarry tile, ceramic tile, earth tones, and vibrant accessories. Colors usually reflect the nature of the desert such as warm oranges, greens, tans and browns. Southwest kitchens usually incorporate ceramic materials and terra cotta elements.

Traditional – Plays up architectural details such as crown moldings, raised wood paneling and rich, deep colors to enhance the mood and traditional feel. Dark stains, honey tones, semi-opaque paints, wicker baskets, and oak cabinets add to the usually more formal feel than country style.

Country – Rustic, weathered look creates a warm, cozy feeling in a country style home. Common colors range from muted hues to earth tones. Exposed beams, pine paneling, brick and barn boards are elements used to express this style. Fabrics and patterns are a sure way to create a country feeling, as is the use of wallpaper and baskets.

Eclectic – A mix of old and new features combined for a harmonious look. This style is not characterized by a particular color palette, patterns, style, or material but is a mix of extravagant decorations from numerous eras, including hand-me-downs, second-hand items and other recyclables. Kitchens and bathrooms may include modern appliances mixed with antique decorations to the complete opposite.

Curtain linings has been used for many years, originally to provide more insulation. There are some very positive reasons why having your curtains lined is beneficial.
- Curtain linings help the curtains to hang properly at the window. They can be fitted neatly onto the reverse side of the fabric or alternatively be hung as an independent layer.
- Using a lining increases the insulation properties of the fabric during the winter months and are a cost effective way to help reduce heat loss through windows and make potential savings on energy bills.
- Curtain linings also have the reverse effective of heat insulation in as much as they help reduce the amount of heat entering the room during the summer months.
- Irrespective of the weight of the curtain fabric a lining will help prevent the fabric from fading.
- A black out lining will reduce the amount of light entering the room.
